At this stage there is still abundance of land on Niue for developments, investors can lease Crown or family owned land. The legal framework for the leasing of land on Niue is administered by the Justice Department whom will also be responsible for surveying the land and titling it through the Land Court.
There are labourers that are also available for hire, however semi skilled and skilled labourers are scarce. Government in the mean time is exploring bringing back Niueans from overseas to help out with any likely shortage of labour.
The rating of power supply in Niue is 230 volts with 50 cycles. Single-phase power is available in all the villages around Niue. The three-phase power is only available in the capital Alofi. At the present developments such as building new houses and factories are concentrating on areas closer to the existing transformers or black metre boxes for supplying power. The developments in areas that are far from the existing transformers/black boxes, will have to meet costs of installing a new transformer and lining costs.
Water is widely available in Niue from two major sources, rainwater and underground water lens. Each village have their own water bore and a large storage tank, tap water is distributed to all consumers.
The telecommunication infrastructure in Niue is well developed – automatic phone system is in use and covers the whole of Niue. Most of the outer villages are connected to the national phone circuitry using a cellular phone system, where each home have a fix cellular unit installed. The same cellular system is being used also for the mobile phone system.
At the moment the Internet Users Society of Niue (IUS-N) is the only internet service provider in Niue. They offer free internet connection to Government departments, private sector and households.
The internet can also be received on a wireless connection (WiFi) in some areas where WiFi hot spots are available. The internet connection via WiFi is broadband and is quite fast. The cost to using this service in Niue is the cost of the WiFi network (802.11b, 802.11g) card of around NZ$200 which can be bought and supported locally. There is a one off mac registration fee of NZ$25 per access point, no usage charge, but any abuse of the service will be dealt with accordingly.
