In 2006, GDP was NZ$20.5 million which equates to NZ$12,158 per capita. New Zealand provides almost 50% of the GDP through budget support programmes. Until recently Telecommunication facilities were the next major source of income. Most trading is done with New Zealand. However there is a large trade imbalance with imports of approximately NZ$3.6 million in 2003 compared with exports of approximately NZ$ 182,997 (2003). Export commodities consist mainly of taro, honey and small quantities of coconut, handicrafts, vanilla, noni and fish.
